I’m really not sure what’s keeping this decrepit smokestack upright.  It looks heavy and the guy wires plainly aren’t doing anything.  I’m guessing the architects learned everything they needed know know buy studying here.  This dying smokestack is in the warehouse district not far from where I work.  I took the picture while on a photowalk over lunch on Friday.  I noticed that chimney years ago – I’m glad I got a chance to take a picture while it’s still upright.

One Response to “Timber!”

It has that Pisa angle, for sure.

This chimney is Lost Minneapolis’s protest of the Urban Renewal era that tragically turned most of the Minneapolis Gateway district into surface parking lots and awful constructs of 1960’s architecture. Keep in mind this old boy outlasted the 35W bridge, the downtown Library, and many other structures that were probably half its age. There was that building that used to be at Washington and Hennepin that housed offices for the USDA — now gone. The Jaguar dealership would be toast today if it hadn’t been for the financial meltdown. The only reason the old Federal Reserve building is still standing is because the in-built parabola made it too hard to demolish. That would have been admirable, if that same design feature hadn’t been the source of constant water leakage, making the building unsuitable for its intended purpose.

I like this chimney. Thanks for posting the picture of it. I wish I could still join you guys on the photo walks.

On another note, I have to point out your typo: “buy” instead of “by.” I think this is your Superego telling you to hold off on that bike purchase. Austerity is suddenly the new vogue. 🙂
