Jason and Sue
These are our good friends and neighbors Jason and Sue. I’ve been blessed both with their friendship and with having them grace my studio with their beautiful family on a couple of occasions.
I’m dedicating this one today because Sue is having surgery today for sinus cancer which was diagnosed only a few months after this picture was taken. Early reports are good – though they had to remove more cheekbone than expected, the cancer didn’t spread to the orbit of her eye. Therefore – she gets to keep both of ‘em.
She’s had a heck of a fight in 2009 with chemo and radiation – and now surgery. Throughout all of it, she’s been a model of faith and grace. Her beauty is something cancer will never take away from her.
Our prayers are with you today and in the future, Sue!
Lindye and Winn
Last week, I had the privilege of attending Dane Sanders’ Fast Track Workshop in Newport Beach, CA. It was a fantastic workshop designed to help photographers focus on their personal brand and to take their photography business to the next level and beyond. One of the high points of the week was a shootout held in Newport Beach. It was a pretty wild setup – I had exactly three minutes where I had complete control of Lindye and Winn to do with them as I pleased. Meanwhile, the other people in the seminar were behind me firing away making their own images.
How did it go? It was an interesting experiment where I took a few HUGE risks to get an image that I had pre-visualized. The day was intensely sunny, and I knew people would be fighting for indirect subtle light. I could do the same – but my pictures would have ended up the same. Instead, I went for a very dramatic spot where I knew the sun would cast a hard shadow on a wall creating a pair of ’shadow dancers’ behind them. This was a challenge since if I wasn’t careful, they would be staring straight into the sun with bad blotchy shadows. I also had to go early in the shootout when the shadows were still strong.
Net result? I love how this image turned out. It was pretty different than the other (also fantastic) poses that the other shooters set up. It’s a great reminder – don’t be afraid to take a risk and go against the grain when you’ve got something cool and unique in mind!
My Turn, Daddy!
It’s tough to not have the “cobbler’s kids” syndrome sometimes when you’ve got client sessions, landscape trips, and loads of business setup tasks to do. It has actually been almost a year since I got William in front of the studio lights – and my wife politely reminded me of this fact. Last week, William looked especially cute at breakfast and I had my studio gear ready to go for another shoot later that day. Between myself and our nanny, we were able to coerce him to pose for a few minutes.

Susanna
Here’s little Susanna – a cute little girl that came to the T3 Imagery studios last week for a photoshoot with her 3-year-old brother Gus. Like most 9-month-olds, it’s hard to get her to stay in one spot for long. Once we gave her the little bouquet of lilies, she just sat transfixed by them – doing all kinds of cute little girl things with the flowers.
Amy, Whatcha Gonna Do?
Apologies for the bad 70’s song reference..
This is Amy. I had the chance to shoot her picture on her birthday a few weeks ago. This is nothing but natural light, a big aperture, and a good subject. I really like the low-key sedate look of this picture.

The Klein Family
Here is a picture of my friends – the Klein family. These are their first family photos – and I’m very honored to have been the guy that got to shoot the pictures. These were taken at one of my favorite spots – the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. This is a spot right next to the Japanese Gardens.

Elementary My Dear Carter.. or Watson..
Here’s another shot from the Sheard family shoot last fall. This time, it’s Carter and Watson – or is it Watson and Carter? Anyway – nothing better than shooting boys being boys and twins being twins!

Mmmm.. Frosting!
This is another picture from Elizabeth’s one-year-old “Cake Smash” photo shoot. She’s got a heck of a sweet tooth – so it really didn’t take much cajoling to get her to dig in.
I love high key shots – perhaps because you work so hard to NOT have white backgrounds when you do nature photography. It looks so clean and modern – and it’s so easy to do if you are set up correctly. Be sure and aim a flash head at the background and set it for 2 stops brighter than your key light. Bam! Nice white background!

Reflections on a Happy Engagement
The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is pretty much Minnesota’s largest photo set. There are so many fantastic locations here to shoot portraits you almost can’t go wrong. The landscape shooting isn’t bad either! This shot worked a lot better in black and white – mostly because the heavy shade with direct sun overhead gave everything a STRONG green cast. Dan and Jacqie don’t look as good as they could with a green tint.

The Future’s So Bright
This is little Ava – looking cute in her sassy shades. She’s at her friend Luke’s third birthday party last Saturday checking out the scene. Her sunglasses were certainly one of the hits of the party!
