Today’s image was inspired by Jon Cornforth during our recent trip to the Big Island of Hawai’i.  We were at Place of Refuge for a sunset shoot, but the vog was so bad that we never even pulled out our cameras.  On our way out, I wanted to snap a picture of the Place of Refuge sign for my trip memory.  While I was doing this, Jon snapped a similar portrait of this head using his iPhone.  I loved how it looked – so I turned my Lensbaby Composer-equipped Canon 5D Mark II up at the totem and took this image.  This guy was part of the park entrance sign along with a few other totems.

Vital Stats: Canon 5D Mark II w/Lensbaby Composer  – ISO 800, 1/200 sec.

What I’m Thankful For

This Thanksgiving weekend, I want to give a special shout-out to the one that I’m really thankful for – my beautiful wife.  Her unending love and support is the sole reason that I’m able to undertake the fun photographic business journey that I’m on now.. and I’m hugely grateful.  I’ve got so many blessings this year – but that one in particular needed some very public recognition.

This shot was made with a new addition to my arsenal – the Lensbaby Composer with the Macro attachement.  It’s a really cool lens that has a very unique look – it gets gradually blurrier once you move out from the ‘sweet spot’ of focus.  I can’t wait to use it more!

Vital Stats: Canon 5D Mark II w/Lensbaby Composer + Lensbaby +10 macro adapter.  ISO 400, f/2.8 ring, 1/80 sec.

The Writing Is On The Wall

Here is one of the iconic spots in Wisconsin’s beautiful Door County.  It is Anderson’s Dock in Ephraim, WI.  Back in the old days, the winners of the yacht race would paint their boat name/team name on the building.  Today, anybody can write their name on the building, provided some simple rules and respect are followed.  If you want to join in the fun now, prepare to bring a ladder since the lower 9′ is pretty solidly covered.

This is the perfect graffiti to find on your fifth wedding anniversary.  This shot is from Anderson Dock in Ephraim, WI.  The entire outside of the boathouse is covered with the names of people that immortalized themselves on the wall.  In the past, it was just the winners of the local regatta that could paint their nautical names on the building – now it’s anybody that wants to.  I’ve got some good pictures of the building that I’ll put up sometime in the near future.

Vital Stats: Canon 5D Mark II w/Canon 135mm f/2L   ISO 100, f/2, 1/6400 sec.

My State Fair is a Great State Fair

It’s apparently abstract week here at T3 Imagery – this makes two in a row.  I really dig this shot because of the color and the feeling of motion you get – it just screams “FAIR!”.  This one wasn’t shot with my DSLR, or even my point ‘n shoot – it was shot with the iPhone.  Hey, if Chase Jarvis can do it..

Vital Stats: iPhone + Polarize effect to give it that ‘Polaroid’ look.

Watercolor Wedding

Today’s shot is admittedly a little different.  This was a title screen for a wedding video that I shot at my friend JP’s wedding a few years ago.  I always thought it looked really cool – and when I stumbled across it today, I thought it would be a fun change of pace for my daily picture.  The picture was processed with Alien Skin’s awesome watercolor filter – it’s not cheap, but they give such a cool artistic look to a shot.  They look especially cool on landscape and flower shots.

Vital Stats:  Canon 350D w/Canon 17-85mm IS @ 85mm  ISO 1600, f/5.6, 1/40 sec.  Processing by Alien Skin

What’s Wrong With Being Sexy?

Based on the popularity of my shot from Wednesday, I’m going to post another one of my neon sign shots from this spring.  As neon goes, it’s hard to find a place that has more than Sex World!  I’m sure at some level it wasn’t very smart taking these pictures – I can see a ‘patron’ getting angry thinking I was trying to take their picture.  This one was processed just like the other with some color and style adjustments in Lightroom.

Vital Stats: Canon 5D Mark II w/Canon 70-200 f/4L w/Canon 1.4x II Extender @ 280mm  ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/250 sec.

This is a shot from a photowalk I went on in the Warehouse District in Minneapolis.  One of the themes I was shooting was neon signs – and there’s a lot of them down there.  This is the Edina Realty sign on Washington Ave – from what I recall.  I also applied a Holga-like effect to it to give it a vintage look.  I love the detail and textures in this shot!

Vital Stats: Canon 5D Mark II w/Canon 70-200 f/4L + 1.4x Extender II @ 280mm  ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/1600 sec.

Last 4th of July, my family and I were on Whidbey Island in the state of Washington staying with our friend Beth.  That little community pulled out all of the stops – parades, contests, food, and of course.. fireworks.  I’ve never seen so many fireworks.  At the end of the parade, there was a formation of old cars all decked out for the event.  This was the front end of one of these beautiful old machines in the parade – proudly flying the flag(s).

Vital Stats: Canon 40D w/Canon 70-200 f/4L + 1.4x TC @ 280mm  ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/800 sec.

Oh Buoy!

This picture was taken in Rockport, MA right near the famous Motif #1 in the inner harbor.  There’s an old photography adage that says “If you see something colorful, take a picture of it.”  This absolutely screams color – and it really sums the town up.  Rockport is a lobster fishing town turned tourist destination that’s about as colorful as this pile of buoys.  While you’re there – don’t miss the ice cream!

Vital Stats: Canon 5D Mark II w/Canon 24-105 f/4L @ 105mm  ISO 200, f/6.3, 1/160 sec.
