When I visited here in 2002, I shot a really cool panoramic of this harbor in Rockport, MA.  I intended to re-shoot this under better light at dusk when I was in Boston last week.  Since I didn’t have a panhead, I had a challenge ahead of me since it’s really tough to get a square pano with a ballhead.  Unfortunately, it didn’t really work out – but I did get some good stuff by stitching some of the parts together.  This is three shots stitched vertically giving a lot of depth and detail.

This is a panoramic shot of the San Diego cityscape taken moments before dawn.  Jon Cornforth and I were set up on the ferry pier at Coronado Island across the bay from downtown.  We were hoping for a stunning sunrise – but the solid marine overcast prevented it.  There was a few short magical minutes of purple just before the sun came up – and I capitalized on it by shooting this image.

It’s a 5-shot panoramic stitched together with Canon’s PhotoStitch.  I had to make sure all five had the same color balance, exposure, and treatment before exporting to stitch.

This image was captured as I was on a scouting mission for Minneathlon 2.0.  I was out hiking with Erik Anderson and Matt Tilstra looking for good challenge locations right at dusk.  This was my view of the skyline as we were walking back to the office.  It’s not the most common view of the Minneapolis skyline – that’s from the south.  This is north and east of downtown with my back to the river.

This is an environmental shot from when we were setting up for this shot:  Second Beach

We had just arrived on Second Beach and moments before we were scrambling over the logs in the left of the frame.  It’s hard to believe that these entire trees were tossed up there like toothpicks during the strong winter storms.  This isn’t the most impactful image I’ve ever posted – but it really shows you what the beach looks like.  It’s also an important lesson on why cropping is important.  The original shot has nothing but boring sky and sand to the top and bottom.  When cropped into a pano, it focuses on the important stuff.

Here is one from the wayback machine.  It’s a three-image-wide panoramic that I took of the harbor in Rockport, MA.  It was shot back in September of 2000 with an Olympus 3030z velcroed to a metal railing.  Though it’s an antique in the digital camera world – it was really amazing at the time and cost me far more than my first dSLR did.  The stitching was all done with Olympus’ pano software that was included with the box.

I have a 3′ long print of this shot that I’ve hung in my office in the past.  The detail included is surprisingly good since the 3030z is only a three megapixel camera.  Be sure to click on this image to see it enlarged!
