Getting Tuned

This is a shot of a San Diego musician getting ready to play at my sister’s wedding.  It was an outrageously difficult place to shoot – heavy shade with bright sunbeams coming through and a light background.  It took a lot of playing with the flash to get the exposure balanced a little better!

Vital Stats: Canon 40D w/Canon 70-200 f/4 + Canon 1.4x II @ 208mm (thank goodness for the extender!)  ISO 200, f/6.3, 1/200 sec.  Canon 580exII to fill in the shadows

A Veiled Threat

This shot was taken about 15 minutes before Jacqie’s wedding started.  We were waiting in a small courtyard and taking some pictures since it was a nice location.  We had to move Jacqie to the shade to avoid the hard, harsh mid-day San Diego sun.  The veil acts as a natural skin softener – you can’t make out texture on her face.  On the downside, there is no way to do retouching.

Vital Stats: Canon 40D w/Canon 70-200 f/4L @ 200mm, ISO 200, f/4, 1/1000 sec.

Riding off into the sunset

This photo of Dan and Jacqie was taken about an hour after their wedding concluded.   We were down on the beach in LaJolla getting some sunset shots and we had just concluded.  Everyone was strolling to their cars to drive to the reception.  I ran ahead of them with a wide angle lens and fired away to capture them with the last moments of sunlight.  Though it doesn’t look like it, I was only about 2′ from Jacqie when this picture was taken.

Vital Stats: Canon 40D w/Canon 10-22mm @ 10mm  ISO 400, f/3.5, 1/160 sec.

Love in the Air

I was asked to do an engagement sitting for Jacqie and Dan this fall.  We had planned on spending most of the day shooting at the Minnesota Landscape arboretum, but got sidetracked in the studio doing formals – which turned out great, btw.

We were able to run over there and get some great shots in the golden light just before dusk.  These were taken in the flower garden just behind the visitor’s center.

Vital Stats: Canon 40D w/Canon 50mm f/1.4  ISO 100, f/2.5, 1/125 sec.

The Reservoir Dogs

My sister is still chapped about this picture.  It was taken as my soon-to-be-brother-in-law was walking down to see his bride-to-be for the first time.   I was assigned to shoot preparation pictures of Dano as he dressed for the wedding.  I had always envisioned this Reservoir Dogs style shot where the dressed-to-kill groomsmen were lined up and walking down like they owned the place.

To get the picture, I had to lay down on the floor and fire away with a big aperture at a high ISO.  The original looks gritty to say the least – not very sharp due to motion and pretty grainy due to high ISO.  It’s exactly the look I wanted.  I think my sister would have rather had him not be five minutes late.

Vital Stats:  Canon 40D w/Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 @ 32mm.  ISO 1600, f/2.8, 1/160 sec.

Bridal Bouquet

Black and white bridal photo with bouquet colorized using Lightroom

Time for another beautiful bridal shot.  This one was taken just moments before the ceremony started in a private little courtyard just behind the park where the wedding took place.  It was sort of tough conditions – direct Southern California sun at mid-afternoon.  This helped make a nice contrasty shot that translated well into this desaturated shot.

The image processing was done with Lightroom 2′s adjustment brush.  I set it to ‘desaturate’ and started painting (with my Wacom tablet) everything that shouldn’t be colored.  It was a little putzy around the flowers, but I got the transition really clean.

Vital Stats: Canon 40D w/Canon 70-200 f/4L @ 163mm.  ISO 100, f/9, 1/250 sec (it was really bright!)

In October, I had the honor of being one of my sister’s ‘official’ wedding photographers shooting second to the gracious and talented ElleG (http://www.ellegphotography.com).  This is one of my favorites – and one of hers as well.  We were walking along the coastline in La Jolla right at dusk – and the light was perfect.

Vital Stats: Canon 40D w/Canon 70-200 f/4 + Canon 1.4x Extender  @ 215mm – ISO 800, f/5.6, 1/250s
